Choose a Top End return journey or a one way adventure through northern Australia, the Red Centre or Western Australia.
These times are itinerary planning recommendations. The standard minimum hire is 7 days, with a 10 day minimum for Darwin to Broome and Darwin to Cairns. Allow extra time for detours, rest days and remote road conditions.

Nature’s Way: Darwin and the Top End
Follow Nature’s Way on a return journey from Darwin through Litchfield, Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks. This Top End loop combines waterfall stops, Aboriginal rock art, wetlands, wildlife and time beside spectacular gorges.
In Litchfield, explore Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and the magnetic termite mounds. When the seasonal 4WD roads are open and your route is approved, add the Reynolds River Track, Sandy Creek / Tjaynera Falls and Surprise Creek Falls. Berry Springs Nature Park makes a rewarding addition close to Darwin.
Allow several nights in Kakadu for Ubirr, Burrungkuy / Nourlangie, a Yellow Water cruise and seasonal access to Maguk and Gunlom. Continue to Katherine and Nitmiluk for a gorge cruise, walks and Leliyn / Edith Falls. Follow park advice on crocodile safety and swim only where currently authorised.
Allow 10 to 14 days for the main loop. Extend south to Elsey National Park for Bitter Springs and Mataranka Thermal Pool, adding around 2 to 3 days for a relaxed visit before returning to Darwin.

East Arnhem Land from Darwin
Travel through Katherine and follow the Central Arnhem Road towards Nhulunbuy for a remote dry season journey into East Arnhem Land. Experience Yolŋu culture through locally operated tours and art centres, and explore coastal landscapes and designated camping areas where your permits allow access.
Base your touring around Nhulunbuy and the Dhimurru recreation areas. Plan permitted visits to places such as Garanhan / Macassan Beach and Bariŋura / Little Bondi Beach, subject to current access advice. Respect Traditional Owners’ directions, sacred sites and local closures. Coastal scenery is a highlight, but crocodiles occur here and beaches must not be treated as swimming destinations.
Allow at least 10 days for a Darwin return journey focused on East Arnhem Land. Add at least another 5 days if including Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Litchfield, with longer recommended for a more relaxed visit to all three parks.
Arrange the relevant Northern Land Council transit permission, Dhimurru visitor access and camping permissions before departure. Adventure Rentals route approval is also required. Vehicles are not permitted in Arnhem Land from October to December; travel at other times depends on our approval, road conditions and local access.

Explorers Way: Darwin to Alice Springs
Begin with Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk before heading south through Katherine to Elsey National Park. Enjoy Bitter Springs and Mataranka Thermal Pool when open, then continue to the Daly Waters Pub, Tennant Creek and Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles.
For travellers seeking a more remote route, approved sections of Binns Track and Iytwelepenty / Davenport Ranges National Park can add quiet camps, rugged scenery and additional 4WD touring. These are optional detours requiring extra days, suitable conditions and prior approval.
Continue to Alice Springs and Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park. Extend your Red Centre touring to Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon, then Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park for walks, cultural experiences and memorable desert views before returning towards Alice Springs. The Mereenie Loop and other remote connections require the relevant permissions and route approval.
Allow around 14 to 21 days when including the Top End and Red Centre highlights. A longer journey suits Binns Track sections, Davenport Ranges and several nights around Uluru and Kings Canyon.

Explorers Way: Darwin to Adelaide
Continue the Darwin to Alice Springs journey south through the Red Centre towards Coober Pedy, with its opal history, underground accommodation and the colourful landscapes of Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park.
Choose the Stuart Highway for the more direct southern journey, or plan an approved detour through Oodnadatta, William Creek and Marree along the Oodnadatta Track. Include Lake Eyre viewpoints when accessible, allowing extra days for remote roads and side trips. Do not drive onto salt lake beds.
Continue through Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park for scenic gorge drives, walking, kangaroos and emus. Finish through the Clare Valley before returning your vehicle at our Adelaide depot.
Allow at least 28 days for a journey including Top End touring, the Red Centre and the Flinders Ranges. Add time for Binns Track, the Oodnadatta Track, Arkaroola and longer park stays.

Savannah Way: Darwin to Broome via the Gibb River Road
Combine Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk with a westbound Savannah Way adventure into the Kimberley. From Katherine, travel towards Timber Creek, with time for Judbarra / Gregory National Park and Keep River National Park where access is open.
Cross into Western Australia for Kununurra and Lake Argyle, then take a separate detour south to Purnululu National Park to explore the Bungle Bungles. Return towards the eastern Gibb River Road for El Questro, rugged ranges, gorge walks and remote camps.
Follow the Gibb River Road towards Derby, choosing open gorge and campground stops that fit your time and approved route. Dimalurru / Tunnel Creek and Bandilngan / Windjana Gorge National Parks can be considered when open. Finish in Broome for beaches, sunsets and your vehicle return.
Allow around 14 to 21 days for Top End touring, Purnululu and the Gibb River Road, with additional time for longer park stays. The Darwin to Broome minimum hire is 10 days; the fuller sightseeing route needs more time. Seasonal roads, water crossings and park access must be checked before travel.

Savannah Way: Darwin to Cairns through the Gulf Savannah
Start with Litchfield, Kakadu, Katherine and Nitmiluk, then continue through Mataranka and Elsey National Park. Choose either the Daly Waters Pub and Cape Crawford approach to Borroloola, or an approved remote route through Roper Bar and Limmen National Park, allowing additional time for its sandstone Lost City landscapes and bush camping.
Travel from Borroloola towards Hells Gate, then plan a detour to Adels Grove and Boodjamulla National Park for Lawn Hill Gorge. The Riversleigh World Heritage fossil area is another option when access is open. Continue through the Gulf country towards Burketown, Normanton and Karumba for local history, birdlife and Gulf sunsets.
Head east through Croydon and Georgetown, adding Cobbold Gorge for a guided gorge experience and Talaroo for hot springs and Ewamian cultural experiences. Continue to Undara Volcanic National Park for a guided lava tube tour, then explore the Atherton Tablelands, including Crater Lakes National Park, Lake Eacham, Lake Barrine and waterfall country before finishing in Cairns.
These destinations are highlights and side trips rather than a single direct road. Allow around 21 to 28 days for the full selection, with longer for multiple nights in each park. The Darwin to Cairns minimum hire is 10 days. Gulf travel is not permitted in Adventure Rentals vehicles from October to December. At other times, confirm our route approval, road reports, park access and seasonal depot dates before booking.

Darwin to Perth: Savannah Way and West Coast Explorer
Link the Darwin to Broome Savannah Way route, including Top End national parks, Lake Argyle, Purnululu and the Gibb River Road, with a southbound West Coast Explorer journey from Broome to Perth.
Continue through the Pilbara, adding Karijini National Park for spectacular gorges and walking. Explore Ningaloo Reef, Cape Range National Park and the Exmouth region, then head south through Coral Bay and Carnarvon. Allow time for Shark Bay, Francois Peron National Park and Kalbarri National Park before continuing towards Geraldton and Nambung National Park’s Pinnacles on the way to Perth.
Allow a minimum of 28 days. Around 35 to 42 days gives more time for the Gibb River Road, Purnululu, Karijini, Ningaloo and coastal stays. Exmouth is a touring stop; vehicle return is at our Perth depot. Plan this journey around Kimberley road access, weather and seasonal depot operations.

Before you travel
Important 4WD Travel Conditions
Where You Can Drive
Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on sealed roads, formed gazetted unsealed roads, approved 4WD tracks and beaches where access is permitted by the relevant authorities. Check the conditions for your route before travelling.
Unsealed road speed
The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour. Drive more slowly when road, weather, visibility or traffic conditions require it, and obey any lower posted speed limit.
Daylight driving
Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities. Driving at dawn and dusk is also not permitted due to the increased risk of wildlife collisions.
Water crossings
Water crossings must not exceed 0.5 metres. Salt water crossings are not permitted.
Approved routes
Stay on formed gazetted roads, approved 4WD tracks and permitted beach access routes. Some remote roads, tracks, islands and destinations require written approval before travel.
Road and park conditions
Follow official road closures, park restrictions and weather warnings. Route approval does not guarantee that a road will be open or suitable when you travel.
Towing
Towing a camper trailer is not permitted with Adventure Rentals vehicles.
Conditions can change quickly due to rain, flooding, fire, maintenance, erosion and seasonal closures. Check current reports before each remote section of your journey.
Beach, Sand Track and Sand Dune Driving
Beach driving is permitted only where local authorities, park managers and official signs allow vehicle access. Customers must comply with all local rules, closures and permit requirements.
Vehicles must remain above the high tide mark and must not be driven through salt water. Drivers must check tide times, beach conditions and local advice before entering a beach.
All travel on beaches, sand tracks and sand dunes is undertaken at the customer’s own risk. The customer is 100 percent liable for any vehicle damage, tyre damage, underbody damage, recovery costs, towing costs or other expenses that occur while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.
These conditions apply to authorised beach and sand access areas throughout South Australia, including Coffin Bay National Park, Fishery Bay, Perlubie Beach near Streaky Bay, designated vehicle access areas at Silver Sands and Sellicks beaches and permitted locations on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. Each destination has its own access rules. Visiting a beach or national park does not mean that driving on every beach, sand track or dune is permitted.
Access can change without notice due to tides, weather, erosion, fire, park management decisions and seasonal conditions. Customers must not enter a beach, sand track or sand dune area when access is closed or prohibited.
Seasonal Top End and Gulf Travel
Arnhem Land and Gulf travel are not permitted in our vehicles from October to December. Other seasonal access depends on our route approval and current conditions. Check official road and park reports before each remote section.
Kakadu Waterfall Access
Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls and the Karnamarr campground are closed for 2026. For later travel, check the official Kakadu access report. Maguk, Gunlom and other sites also have seasonal access and safety requirements.
Crocodile Safety
Crocodiles occur across the Top End, Arnhem Land and Gulf waterways. Follow official signs and ranger advice, keep away from water edges and swim only where currently authorised.

Adventure Rentals Darwin operates from 77 McMinn Street, Darwin NT 0800. Vehicle collection and return are by appointment, allowing our team to prepare your vehicle and provide a detailed handover.
Please allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for a 4WD camper handover. During the handover, our team explains the vehicle, roof top tent, electrical system, refrigeration, cooking equipment, tyre pressures, air compressor, recovery equipment and safe operation.
A Toyota Prado 4WD car handover generally takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the proposed route and the questions asked during collection.

Yes. Unlimited kilometres are included with Adventure Rentals 4WD car and camper hire, giving you flexibility for the Northern Territory and interstate journeys.
How much does it cost to hire a 4WD from Darwin?

What liability option is included with Darwin 4WD hire?

Can I hire a 4WD car without a roof top tent?
Yes. Adventure Rentals offers a Toyota Prado GXL 4WD car for travellers staying in hotels, motels, cabins, holiday parks or wilderness lodges.
What is the difference between the Toyota Prado car and Toyota Prado camper?
The Toyota Prado camper includes a roof top tent and camping equipment for sleeping, cooking and outdoor living. The Toyota Prado car does not include a roof top tent, bedding or complete camper kitchen equipment and is better suited to travellers using fixed accommodation or supplying their own camping equipment.
Does the camper include cooking and sleeping equipment?
Yes. Camper hires include a roof top tent, sleeping equipment, linen, refrigeration, cooking equipment, cookware, a camping table and chairs. The exact setup varies according to the selected camper model.
Can I drive the vehicle on dirt and unsealed roads?
Yes. Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on formed gazetted unsealed roads and approved 4WD tracks. The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour, or any lower posted or safe speed required by the conditions.
Can I drive an Adventure Rentals vehicle on beaches?
Yes, beach driving is permitted where vehicle access is authorised by the relevant local authority or park manager. Customers must stay above the high tide mark, avoid all salt water and follow local signs, closures and permit conditions.
Customers are 100 percent liable for any damage or recovery costs arising while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.
Can I drive at night?
No. Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities. Driving at dawn and dusk is also not permitted because wildlife is more active and difficult to see.
Is roadside assistance included?
Adventure Rentals provides 24/7 on road support. Inherent mechanical faults receive free roadside assistance. Fees and charges apply to driver induced incidents and other issues listed in the rental agreement, including incorrect refuelling, flat batteries, lost keys, locked keys, tyre changing and vehicle recovery.
Can I collect in Darwin and return the vehicle somewhere else?
One way hire may be available from Darwin to Broome, Cairns, Alice Springs, Adelaide or Perth, subject to availability, route approval, minimum hire requirements and seasonal depot operations.
Can I tow a camper trailer?
No. Towing a camper trailer is not permitted with Adventure Rentals vehicles.
Are the recommended itinerary times the minimum hire period?
No. The standard minimum hire is seven days, with longer minimums applying to some journeys and dates. Our recommended itinerary times allow for sightseeing and remote travel. Confirm the actual minimum rental period and one way conditions in your quote.
How long should I allow for Nature’s Way?
Allow 10 to 14 days for Litchfield, Kakadu and Nitmiluk. Add around 2 to 3 days for Elsey National Park, Bitter Springs and Mataranka.
Can I take a camper to East Arnhem Land?
An approved dry season itinerary may be possible, with the relevant transit, visitor access and camping permissions. Allow at least 10 days, or at least 15 days with Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Litchfield. Arnhem Land travel is not permitted from October to December.
How long should I allow from Darwin to Perth?
Allow a minimum of 28 days for the Savannah Way, Gibb River Road and West Coast Explorer combination. Around 35 to 42 days provides a more relaxed pace.
Where can I fill up with diesel and AdBlue before returning my Prado in Darwin?
The closest service station to our Darwin depot is Solo on the Stuart Highway in Stuart Park.
To find diesel and AdBlue nearby, visit Petrol Spy and enter Stuart Park or postcode 0820. Select Diesel from the fuel type dropdown, then change it to AdBlue to find stations that list it.
Not all service stations stock AdBlue, so check with your chosen station before visiting to confirm availability.
Do I need park passes, permits and campsite bookings?
Yes. Visitors to the Northern Territory need an NT Parks Visitor Pass for most parks and reserves managed by NT Parks and Wildlife, including Litchfield, Nitmiluk, Elsey and Watarrka National Parks. Some parks are exempt, and NT residents do not need this visitor pass. Camping bookings and fees are separate.
Kakadu and Uluru Kata Tjuta National Parks require separate park passes. These two parks are managed by Parks Australia and are not covered by the NT Parks Visitor Pass. If your itinerary includes either park, arrange its own pass in addition to any NT Parks Visitor Pass required for your other destinations. Check current fees and exemptions before travel.

Additional access permits and camping permissions may be required for Aboriginal land, including Northern Land Council and Dhimurru permissions for East Arnhem Land. Park passes and permits do not replace Adventure Rentals route approval.
Can I visit Garig Gunak Barlu National Park?

Can I drive the Gulf Savannah route in the wet season?
Gulf travel is not permitted in our vehicles from October to December. For other dates, ask our team to confirm route suitability and check current road, park and campground access.
