Perth, South West, Esperance and Wheatbelt Loop

A Perth, South West, Esperance and Wheatbelt loop offers one of the most varied road trips in Western Australia. Instead of following the same road in both directions, travellers can experience the coast, forests, beaches, national parks, farming country, granite formations and Wheatbelt communities in one circular journey.

Begin by travelling south from Perth through Bunbury and Busselton to the Margaret River Region. Spend time exploring the coastline, caves, forests, beaches, local produce and renowned food and wine experiences.

Continue through the Southern Forests and Valleys, including Pemberton, Manjimup and Walpole. From Walpole, follow the south coast through Denmark and Albany, with opportunities to visit the Valley of the Giants, William Bay National Park, Torndirrup National Park, Porongurup National Park and Stirling Range National Park.

From Albany, continue east towards Bremer Bay, Hopetoun and Fitzgerald River National Park before reaching Esperance. Allow enough time to explore the beaches and coastal scenery around Esperance, including Cape Le Grand National Park and Lucky Bay.

Beach access may be permitted in selected areas around Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park when authorised by park managers and local authorities. Customers must follow all signs and closures, remain above the high tide mark and accept full liability for any damage or recovery costs that occur while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.

For the return journey to Perth, travel inland through Ravensthorpe and Lake King to Hyden. Visit Wave Rock, Hippo’s Yawn and the surrounding granite formations before continuing through the Wheatbelt.

The journey from Hyden to Perth can include Wheatbelt towns such as Kondinin, Corrigin and Brookton. Depending on the route selected, travellers may also include parts of the PUBLIC Silo Trail, seasonal wildflower areas, historic country towns and local farm experiences.

Suggested route: Perth to Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Pemberton, Walpole, Denmark, Albany, Hopetoun, Esperance, Ravensthorpe, Lake King, Hyden, the Wheatbelt and Perth.

We recommend allowing approximately 12 to 16 days for the full loop. Travellers wanting additional walks, national parks, beach days or a slower pace should allow two to three weeks.

A shorter seven to ten day itinerary should concentrate on Margaret River, the Southern Forests, Denmark, Albany and an inland return through selected Wheatbelt towns. Esperance should only be added when there is enough time to avoid rushed days and excessive daily driving.

Perth to Exmouth and Return

A Perth to Exmouth return journey follows the West Coast through destinations such as the Pinnacles, Geraldton, Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Coral Bay and Exmouth.

Travellers can include François Peron National Park near Shark Bay when roads are open, vehicle access is permitted and the route has been approved by Adventure Rentals. François Peron National Park includes soft sand and remote tracks, so drivers must reduce tyre pressures, follow park advice and drive conservatively.

Exmouth is an itinerary destination and not an Adventure Rentals return depot. Travellers visiting Exmouth must either return their vehicle to Perth or continue north to return it at our Broome depot, subject to availability and one way hire requirements.

A Perth to Exmouth return trip generally requires at least 14 to 18 days. Additional time is recommended when including Kalbarri National Park, François Peron National Park, Cape Range National Park or extended stays at Ningaloo Reef.

Perth to Broome through the West Coast and Pilbara

A Perth to Broome one way journey allows travellers to combine the West Coast with Ningaloo Reef, Karijini National Park, the eastern Pilbara and Cape Keraudren before returning the vehicle at our Broome depot.

The journey can include the Pinnacles, Kalbarri, Shark Bay, François Peron National Park, Coral Bay, Exmouth, Cape Range National Park, Karijini National Park, Port Hedland, the eastern Pilbara and Cape Keraudren.

Travellers commonly visit Exmouth as part of this route but continue north to Broome rather than returning the vehicle in Exmouth.

Allow approximately 14 to 21 days for a Perth to Broome journey. A longer trip provides more time for Ningaloo Reef, Karijini National Park, remote coastal camps, the eastern Pilbara and Cape Keraudren.

One way hire between Perth and Broome is subject to seasonal depot operations, minimum hire requirements and vehicle availability.

Perth to Darwin through the Kimberley

Travellers continuing beyond Broome can explore the Kimberley, Gibb River Road, Purnululu National Park, Kununurra and the Northern Territory before returning the vehicle in Darwin.

Perth to Alice Springs by the Outback Way

The Outback Way is known as Australia’s Longest Shortcut and connects Western Australia with the Red Centre and Outback Queensland.

From Perth, travellers should allow at least two to three days to reach Laverton through the Wheatbelt and Goldfields. From Laverton, the Great Central Road crosses remote Western Australia towards the Northern Territory border and Uluru.

The journey can continue through Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, Kings Canyon and the Red Centre before reaching Alice Springs. Depending on route conditions and approvals, travellers may also include the Red Centre Way, Mereenie Loop and the West MacDonnell Ranges.

This remote route requires careful planning, current permits, suitable road conditions and prior approval from Adventure Rentals. Travellers must carry adequate food, water and fuel and should top up diesel whenever it is available.

Allow approximately 14 to 21 days between Perth and Alice Springs if you want enough time to experience the route and visit major destinations at both ends.

Perth to Cairns by the Outback Way

A Perth to Cairns journey through the Outback Way is one of Australia’s great cross country 4WD adventures. It combines the Great Central Road, the Red Centre, Outback Queensland and Tropical North Queensland in one extended itinerary.

Begin by travelling from Perth through the Wheatbelt and Goldfields to Laverton. Allow at least two to three days for this first section before beginning the remote Great Central Road.

From Laverton, follow the Great Central Road through remote Western Australia towards the Northern Territory border and Uluru. Travellers can explore Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park before continuing through Kings Canyon, the Red Centre Way and Alice Springs.

From Alice Springs, the Outback Way continues east through remote sections of the Northern Territory and Queensland. The route eventually reaches Winton, a major Outback Queensland destination known for dinosaur experiences, outback history and vast open landscapes.

Important 4WD Travel Conditions

Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on sealed roads, formed gazetted unsealed roads, approved 4WD tracks and beaches where access is permitted by the relevant authorities. Some remote roads, tracks, islands and destinations require written approval before travel.

• The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour
• Drivers must travel more slowly when road, weather, visibility or traffic conditions require it
• Any lower posted speed limit must be followed
• Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities
• Driving at dawn and dusk is not permitted due to the increased risk of wildlife collisions
• Water crossings must not exceed 0.5 metres
• Salt water crossings are not permitted
• Vehicles must remain on gazetted roads, approved tracks and permitted beach access routes
• Official road closures, park restrictions and weather warnings must always be followed
• Towing a camper trailer is not permitted

Approval to include a route in your itinerary does not guarantee that the road will be open or suitable when you travel. Conditions can change quickly due to rain, flooding, fire, maintenance, erosion and seasonal closures.

Beach, Sand Track and Sand Dune Driving

Beach driving is permitted only where local authorities, park managers and official signs allow vehicle access. Customers must comply with all local rules, closures and permit requirements.

Vehicles must remain above the high tide mark and must not be driven through salt water. Drivers must check tide times, beach conditions and local advice before entering a beach.

All travel on beaches, sand tracks and sand dunes is undertaken at the customer’s own risk. The customer is 100 percent liable for any vehicle damage, tyre damage, underbody damage, recovery costs, towing costs or other expenses that occur while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.

This applies to permitted beach and sand access areas including destinations such as Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park and approved routes within François Peron National Park.

Access can change without notice due to tides, weather, erosion, fire, park management decisions and seasonal conditions. Customers must not enter a beach, sand track or sand dune area when access is closed or prohibited.

Collecting Your 4WD in Perth
