The times below are itinerary planning recommendations, not the minimum rental period. Allow extra time for park detours, rest days, road conditions and remote travel.

Adelaide Outback Loop
Combine mountain scenery, remote tracks, salt lakes and outback history on a circular journey from Adelaide. Travel through the Clare Valley to Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park, allowing time for walking, scenic 4WD gorge drives and the landscapes around Wilpena Pound. Watch for the region’s abundant kangaroos and emus as you explore, and drive carefully around wildlife. Continue into the Northern Flinders Ranges to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Follow your approved route towards Marree and the Oodnadatta Track, with stops at Lake Harry, Lake Eyre South viewpoints, historic railway sites, Coward Springs and William Creek. A side trip to Kati Thanda Lake Eyre National Park can be considered when access is open and your route is approved. Lake conditions vary, and water is never guaranteed.
Continue to Oodnadatta before turning towards Coober Pedy. Explore underground accommodation, opal history and the colourful landscapes of Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park, where an entry permit is required. Return south along the Stuart Highway through Glendambo and Pimba, with a detour to Woomera. View salt lake landscapes around Lake Hart and Island Lagoon from safe, authorised stopping points. Do not drive onto lake beds.
Allow approximately 14 to 21 days for the outback loop. Add a separate coastal extension for Deep Creek, Rapid Bay and Kangaroo Island, or for the Eyre Peninsula. Gawler Ranges can also be added to the Adelaide to Perth journey described below. These destinations need additional days rather than being squeezed into the same itinerary.
Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island Extension
Travel south from Adelaide through McLaren Vale, known for its world class wines, welcoming cellar doors and local food experiences. Continue through the Fleurieu Peninsula to Deep Creek National Park and Rapid Bay. Enjoy coastal walks, wildlife, camping and time beside the water. Vehicle access to a campground does not mean driving on its beach is permitted.
Continue to Cape Jervis for a ferry journey to Kangaroo Island, subject to prior approval from Adventure Rentals for taking the vehicle on the ferry. Book the ferry and campsites ahead, check vehicle dimensions and allow time for wildlife, Flinders Chase National Park and the island’s distinctive local food and wine experiences, breathtaking scenery and easy going island lifestyle.
Allow additional time if visiting both the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island. Follow current park access advice and drive carefully around wildlife.
Adelaide to Perth via Eyre Peninsula and the Nullarbor
Begin with the Eyre Peninsula, where world class seafood and beaches, wild coastal landscapes and close up marine animal encounters come with a down to earth, easy going country pace. Explore Port Lincoln, Lincoln National Park, Memory Cove, Fishery Bay and Coffin Bay National Park. Continue along the western coastline towards Streaky Bay, Perlubie Beach and Ceduna. Memory Cove requires advance booking and an access key. Check local access and camping arrangements for Fishery Bay and Perlubie Beach before arriving.
Optional Gawler Ranges addition: Add an inland detour through Gawler Ranges National Park for rugged volcanic landscapes, wildlife and remote camping. Plan this alongside your Eyre Peninsula route before continuing towards Ceduna and the Nullarbor, and allow extra days for the detour.
Cross the Nullarbor along the Eyre Highway, stopping at designated Bunda Cliffs lookouts and Head of Bight for seasonal southern right whale watching. Check the visitor centre’s current opening arrangements and whale sightings. Stay behind barriers and away from cliff edges.
Enjoy the 90 Mile Straight between Caiguna and Balladonia, known as Australia’s longest straight stretch of road. Break up the crossing with selected holes of Nullarbor Links, the world’s longest golf course. Playing the entire course requires a route through Kalgoorlie and extra time; it is not all on the direct road to Esperance.
Continue through Norseman to Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park, including Lucky Bay. Follow the south coast through Hopetoun, Fitzgerald River National Park, Bremer Bay, Albany and Denmark, then travel through Walpole, Pemberton and the Margaret River Region before finishing in Perth.
This reverses the southern coastal journey described on our Perth depot page. Beaches, dirt roads and approved 4WD tracks offer plenty of variety, but vehicle access is permitted only in designated areas. Allow at least 14 to 21 days, and preferably 21 to 28 days when including the Eyre Peninsula, Gawler Ranges, Esperance and the South West.
Explorers Way: Adelaide to Alice Springs
Follow an adventurous variation of the Explorers Way through Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park, Arkaroola, Marree and the Oodnadatta Track. Enjoy scenic 4WD gorge drives and look for the abundant kangaroos and emus that make the Flinders Ranges such a rewarding wildlife destination. Include Kati Thanda Lake Eyre viewpoints or an approved side trip when roads are open, then continue towards Coober Pedy and Kanku Breakaways Conservation Park.
For a more remote alternative after Oodnadatta, continue via Witjira National Park and Mt Dare to join the southern Binns Track, following the Old Andado route towards Alice Springs. This option requires prior route approval, suitable road conditions, relevant permits and extra travel time. It is an alternative to the Coober Pedy and Stuart Highway approach, with Uluru, Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges planned as additional Red Centre touring.
For the Coober Pedy and Stuart Highway option, continue north into the Northern Territory, turning towards Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park. Allow time for walks, cultural experiences and sunrise or sunset viewing, while planning your driving within permitted daylight hours.
Travel on to Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon, then explore Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park before finishing in Alice Springs. The Mereenie Loop and any other remote connecting tracks require route approval and the relevant permits.
Allow a minimum of 14 days. Around 21 days provides a more comfortable pace when including Arkaroola, the Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Uluru, Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Davenport Ranges lies north of Alice Springs and fits naturally into the Darwin continuation.

Explorers Way: Adelaide to Darwin via the Red Centre and Binns Track
Continue along the Explorers Way from Adelaide through the Red Centre to Darwin, combining the Adelaide to Alice Springs itinerary with another 10 to 14 days minimum travelling north. Approved Binns Track sections offer an adventurous detour from the main touring route. From Alice Springs, follow approved sections of the Binns Track through the East MacDonnell region and onwards to Iytwelepenty / Davenport Ranges National Park, then visit Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles. This uses selected sections of Binns Track rather than promising the entire track within this timeframe.
Continue through Tennant Creek to the Daly Waters Pub, then spend time around Mataranka and Bitter Springs. Head to Katherine and Nitmiluk National Park for gorge experiences, walking and Leliyn / Edith Falls.
Continue into Kakadu National Park for Aboriginal rock art, wetlands and seasonal waterfall experiences. Options include Moline / Igoymarrwa, Gunlom, Maguk, Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls where sites are open, access is authorised and conditions suit your vehicle. These destinations involve remote access roads and 4WD touring; check each site’s current requirements rather than assuming all waterfall roads are the same.
Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls are closed for 2026. For later travel, check the official Kakadu access report before planning either visit. Confirm any special access arrangements for Moline / Igoymarrwa and follow park advice on crocodile safety and swimming.
Finish with Litchfield National Park before returning the vehicle in Darwin. Allow at least 24 to 28 days overall, including a minimum of 10 to 14 days after Alice Springs. A longer journey is recommended for Binns Track sections, Davenport Ranges, several nights in Kakadu and rest days. Remote tracks and waterfall access are seasonal.

Adelaide to Cairns via the Birdsville Track and Outback Queensland
Begin in the Flinders Ranges, enjoying scenic 4WD gorge drives and spotting kangaroos and emus before travelling through Parachilna towards Marree. Follow the Birdsville Track to Birdsville when it is officially open, conditions are suitable and Adventure Rentals has approved the route. Prepare for long remote sections, carry sufficient food, drinking water and diesel, and use current road reports.
Spend time in Birdsville and consider a visit to Big Red as a separate excursion. Visiting the dune does not include approval to drive over it or enter the Simpson Desert. Ask our team about the permitted options before planning any sand driving.
Continue through Outback Queensland towards Longreach for the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum. Travel onwards to Winton for dinosaur experiences, outback history and boulder opals, with an optional approved side trip towards Opalton.
Choose a suitable route through Hughenden and the inland north, or via Charters Towers and the coast, before reaching the Atherton Tablelands. Allow time for rainforest walks and waterfalls around Millaa Millaa and the Tablelands before descending to Cairns.
Finish with tropical rainforests and a Great Barrier Reef experience to wash the outback dust away. Allow approximately 21 to 28 days minimum, with 28 days or more recommended for a comfortable pace and reef activities. Cairns depot operations are seasonal and the depot closes at the end of November, so confirm your return date with our team. Any proposed Gulf Savannah route requires separate seasonal and route checks.

Important 4WD Travel Conditions
Where You Can Drive
Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on sealed roads, formed gazetted unsealed roads, approved 4WD tracks and beaches where access is permitted by the relevant authorities. Check the conditions for your route before travelling.
Unsealed road speed
The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour. Drive more slowly when road, weather, visibility or traffic conditions require it, and obey any lower posted speed limit.
Daylight driving
Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities. Driving at dawn and dusk is also not permitted due to the increased risk of wildlife collisions.
Water crossings
Water crossings must not exceed 0.5 metres. Salt water crossings are not permitted.
Approved routes
Stay on formed gazetted roads, approved 4WD tracks and permitted beach access routes. Some remote roads, tracks, islands and destinations require written approval before travel.
Road and park conditions
Follow official road closures, park restrictions and weather warnings. Route approval does not guarantee that a road will be open or suitable when you travel.
Towing
Towing a camper trailer is not permitted with Adventure Rentals vehicles.
Conditions can change quickly due to rain, flooding, fire, maintenance, erosion and seasonal closures. Check current reports before each remote section of your journey.
Beach, Sand Track and Sand Dune Driving
Beach driving is permitted only where local authorities, park managers and official signs allow vehicle access. Customers must comply with all local rules, closures and permit requirements.
Vehicles must remain above the high tide mark and must not be driven through salt water. Drivers must check tide times, beach conditions and local advice before entering a beach.
All travel on beaches, sand tracks and sand dunes is undertaken at the customer’s own risk. The customer is 100 percent liable for any vehicle damage, tyre damage, underbody damage, recovery costs, towing costs or other expenses that occur while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.
These conditions apply to authorised beach and sand access areas throughout South Australia, including Coffin Bay National Park, Fishery Bay, Perlubie Beach near Streaky Bay, designated vehicle access areas at Silver Sands and Sellicks beaches and permitted locations on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. Each destination has its own access rules. Visiting a beach or national park does not mean that driving on every beach, sand track or dune is permitted.
Access can change without notice due to tides, weather, erosion, fire, park management decisions and seasonal conditions. Customers must not enter a beach, sand track or sand dune area when access is closed or prohibited.

Please allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for a 4WD camper handover. During the handover, our team explains the vehicle, roof top tent, electrical system, refrigeration, cooking equipment, tyre pressures, air compressor, recovery equipment and safe operation.
A Toyota Prado 4WD car handover generally takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the proposed route and the questions asked during collection.

What is the difference between the Toyota Prado car and Toyota Prado camper?
The Toyota Prado camper includes a roof top tent and camping equipment for sleeping, cooking and outdoor living. The Toyota Prado car does not include a roof top tent, bedding or complete camper kitchen equipment and is better suited to travellers using fixed accommodation or supplying their own camping equipment.
Does the camper include cooking and sleeping equipment?
Yes. Camper hires include a roof top tent, sleeping equipment, linen, refrigeration, cooking equipment, cookware, a camping table and chairs. The exact setup varies according to the selected camper model.
Can I drive the vehicle on dirt and unsealed roads?
Yes. Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on formed gazetted unsealed roads and approved 4WD tracks. The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour, or any lower posted or safe speed required by the conditions.
Can I drive an Adventure Rentals vehicle on beaches?
Yes, beach driving is permitted where vehicle access is authorised by the relevant local authority or park manager. Customers must stay above the high tide mark, avoid all salt water and follow local signs, closures and permit conditions.
Customers are 100 percent liable for any damage or recovery costs arising while travelling on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.
Can I drive at night?

Is roadside assistance included?
Adventure Rentals provides 24/7 on road support. Inherent mechanical faults receive free roadside assistance. Fees and charges apply to driver induced incidents and other issues listed in the rental agreement, including incorrect refuelling, flat batteries, lost keys, locked keys, tyre changing and vehicle recovery.
Can I collect in Adelaide and return the vehicle somewhere else?
One way hire may be available from Adelaide to Perth, Alice Springs, Darwin, Broome or Cairns, subject to availability, route approval, minimum hire requirements and seasonal depot operations.
Can I tow a camper trailer?
No. Towing a camper trailer is not permitted with Adventure Rentals vehicles.
Can I drive on Silver Sands and Sellicks beaches and other beaches near Adelaide?
Yes, only within authorised vehicle access areas and subject to Adventure Rentals conditions. Silver Sands, Sellicks and selected other Onkaparinga beaches have designated vehicle access areas. Follow council signs, access fees or permit requirements, local speed limits, closures and directions. Public access permission does not remove your rental responsibilities.
Can I drive on beaches on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas?
Beach driving is permitted only where the local authority or park manager authorises vehicle access and your route meets our rental conditions. Permission at one beach does not apply to nearby beaches. Check each location, use designated access points, protect dunes and wildlife, remain above the high tide mark and avoid all salt water. Customers are 100 percent liable for damage or recovery costs arising on beaches, sand tracks or sand dunes.
Can I visit Lincoln National Park, Coffin Bay and Memory Cove?
Yes, these can form part of an approved Eyre Peninsula itinerary when access is open. Lincoln National Park and Coffin Bay National Park include coastal camping and sightseeing, with 4WD access required for some remote areas. Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area requires advance booking and an access key. Book park entry and camping as required.
Can I include Fishery Bay and Perlubie Beach near Streaky Bay?
Yes, both can be considered in an Eyre Peninsula itinerary. Check current local vehicle access and camping arrangements before travel. Do not assume that every beach allows driving or overnight camping. Beach and sand driving remains subject to rental conditions and full customer liability for damage and recovery.
Can I travel on the Oodnadatta Track or Birdsville Track?
These routes can be included when officially open, conditions are suitable and your itinerary is approved by Adventure Rentals. Check the South Australian outback road report, plan fuel stops and carry sufficient drinking water and food. Do not enter closed roads, flooded sections or salt lake beds.
Can I take the vehicle to Kangaroo Island?
Ask our reservations team for approval before booking a vehicle ferry to Kangaroo Island. Ferry travel must be authorised and all rental conditions followed. Confirm vehicle dimensions with the ferry operator and book crossings and campsites ahead.
How long should I allow from Adelaide to Alice Springs or Darwin?
Allow at least 14 days to Alice Springs, with around 21 days recommended for the fuller outback and Red Centre itinerary. Allow another 10 to 14 days minimum to Darwin, and longer when including Binns Track sections, Davenport Ranges and several nights in Kakadu.
When can I see whales on the Nullarbor?

Requirements depend on your route. South Australian park entry and camping, Memory Cove access, Kanku Breakaways, Uluru Kata Tjuta, Northern Territory parks, Kakadu and some Aboriginal lands or connecting tracks may require passes, permits or bookings. Confirm requirements before travel.
Are the recommended itinerary times the minimum hire period?
No. The standard minimum hire is seven days, with longer minimums applying to some journeys and dates. Our recommended itinerary times allow for sightseeing and remote travel. Confirm the actual minimum rental period and one way conditions in your quote.
