Seasonal Road Access
The Gibb River Road, Purnululu access road and remote side tracks depend on weather, road openings and route approval. Depot opening does not guarantee road access.

The suggested durations below allow time for sightseeing and remote travel. They are planning recommendations rather than minimum hire periods. All routes are subject to availability, approval and seasonal access.
Broome to Darwin via the Gibb River Road and Top End
Link the Kimberley with Nitmiluk, Kakadu and Litchfield on a Broome to Darwin 4WD road trip. This journey follows the western half of the Savannah Way, with a Gibb River Road adventure and a Top End extension beyond Katherine.
Head through Derby towards Bandilngan / Windjana Gorge and Dimalurru / Tunnel Creek National Parks when open. Follow the Gibb River Road through the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges, choosing stops at Dalmanyi / Bell Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Manning Gorge and remote station campgrounds. Continue to El Questro for gorge walks before exploring Kununurra and Lake Argyle.
Add a separate Purnululu National Park extension via the Great Northern Highway and the park access road. Allow several extra days for the Bungle Bungle Range, Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm. This is a detour from the eastern Kimberley rather than a stop directly on the Gibb.
Cross into the Northern Territory via Keep River National Park, Timber Creek and the Victoria River region, allowing time for approved touring in Judbarra / Gregory National Park. At Katherine, explore Nitmiluk Gorge and Leliyn / Edith Falls. Continue through Kakadu for Ubirr, Burrungkuy / Nourlangie and a Yellow Water wildlife cruise, then Litchfield for Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole before finishing in Darwin.
Allow around 21 to 28 days for the fuller itinerary with all three Top End parks and Purnululu. A more selective journey may suit 14 to 21 days. These are planning recommendations; the Broome to Darwin corridor minimum hire is 10 days. Confirm current park access and swimming advice throughout the trip.

Broome to Cairns: the Full Savannah Way
Cross northern Australia from the Kimberley to Tropical North Queensland on a Broome to Cairns Savannah Way adventure. Travel via the Gibb River Road, Katherine and the Gulf Savannah, combining remote camps, Aboriginal culture, spectacular gorges and rainforest country.
Begin with Derby, the Gibb River Road gorges and El Questro, then explore Kununurra and Lake Argyle. Add Purnululu National Park as a separate extension before travelling through Keep River National Park, Timber Creek and the Victoria River region towards Katherine and Nitmiluk National Park.
Continue south to Mataranka and Elsey National Park for Bitter Springs and Mataranka Thermal Pool when open. Choose an approved route towards Borroloola via Daly Waters and Cape Crawford, or allow extra days for Roper Bar and Limmen National Park, known for its sandstone Lost City formations and remote bush camping.
Head east towards Hells Gate and Burketown, with an optional detour to Adels Grove, Boodjamulla National Park and Lawn Hill Gorge. The Riversleigh World Heritage fossil area adds another rewarding side trip when access permits. Continue through Normanton and Karumba for Gulf sunsets and birdlife, then Croydon and Georgetown.
Break the eastern journey with guided experiences at Cobbold Gorge, Talaroo Hot Springs and the Undara lava tubes in Undara Volcanic National Park. Finish through the Atherton Tablelands for rainforest walks, waterfalls and the crater lakes of Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine in Crater Lakes National Park before arriving in Cairns.
Allow around 35 to 42 days for this extended Savannah Way itinerary, with longer for Purnululu, Limmen and several nights at each major stop. These highlights include side trips rather than one direct road. Gulf travel is not permitted in our vehicles from October to December. Confirm route approval, road openings, park access and the seasonal operating dates of both depots.

Broome to Perth via the West Coast, Karijini and Ningaloo
Discover the changing landscapes of Western Australia on a Broome to Perth 4WD road trip through the Pilbara, Karijini National Park and the Coral Coast. Before heading south, add an optional Dampier Peninsula extension north of Broome for red cliffs, coastal camping and Aboriginal guided experiences around communities such as Beagle Bay and Djarindjin / Lombadina, subject to local access and bookings.
Return through Broome and follow the Great Northern Highway towards Eighty Mile Beach and Port Hedland. Turn inland for Karijini National Park, where ancient rock walls frame gorge walks, lookouts and waterholes. Choose walks suited to your ability and current park advice, then continue towards the coast and Exmouth.
Explore World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park, combining snorkelling, coastal camps and walks around places such as Yardie Creek. Continue to Coral Bay for reef tours and opportunities to see manta rays, turtles and colourful fish. Whale sharks and humpback whales are seasonal highlights best experienced with licensed tour operators; wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Head south through Carnarvon, then detour to Shark Bay for Denham, Shell Beach and the managed dolphin experience at Monkey Mia. Add Francois Peron National Park for red dunes, coastal lookouts and designated 4WD tracks. Beyond the Peron Heritage Precinct, high clearance 4WD, suitable tyre pressures and current track advice are essential.
Continue to Kalbarri National Park for Murchison River gorges, the Skywalk and coastal cliffs. Travel through Geraldton, then Nambung National Park for the Pinnacles near Cervantes before finishing in Perth.
Allow around 21 to 28 days, or 28 to 35 days with the Dampier Peninsula and longer stays in Karijini, Ningaloo and Shark Bay. Exmouth and Coral Bay are touring stops; this journey finishes with vehicle return at our Perth depot. Adventure Rentals does not offer an Exmouth return depot.

Broome to Alice Springs via the Gibb, Bungle Bungles and Tanami Road
Combine Kimberley gorge country with a remote desert crossing and the Red Centre on a Broome to Alice Springs 4WD adventure. Begin through Derby and the Gibb River Road, allowing time for Bell Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Manning Gorge and El Questro before continuing towards Kununurra and Lake Argyle.
Travel south on the Great Northern Highway for a separate visit to Purnululu National Park. Walk among the striped domes of the Bungle Bungle Range, explore Cathedral Gorge and visit Echidna Chasm before returning to the highway and continuing to Halls Creek.
From Halls Creek, follow the approved Tanami Road route towards Central Australia. An optional Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park detour requires extra time and suitable access. The Tanami is a remote crossing with long distances between services: confirm every fuel stop before departure and carry sufficient fuel, drinking water, food and emergency supplies. Community visits and side roads may require separate permission.
After reaching the Alice Springs region, continue your Red Centre touring through Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park for Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge and Redbank Gorge. Follow an approved route via the Mereenie Loop to Watarrka National Park and Kings Canyon, with the required permit, before travelling to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park for cultural experiences, desert walks and sunrise or sunset viewing.
Return to Alice Springs via the Lasseter and Stuart Highways to complete the journey. This Red Centre circuit extends beyond the Tanami arrival and adds substantial sightseeing time and distance. Allow around 28 to 35 days for the Gibb, Purnululu, Tanami and Red Centre highlights, with longer for relaxed park stays. Remote route approval, current road advice, permits and park bookings are essential.

Before you travel
Important 4WD Travel Conditions
Approved Roads and Tracks
Travel is permitted on sealed roads, formed gazetted unsealed roads and approved 4WD tracks. Obtain approval for remote routes before travel and follow all road closures and park restrictions.
Unsealed Road Speed
The maximum on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour. Obey lower posted limits and drive more slowly whenever conditions require it.
Daylight Driving
Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities. Avoid driving at dawn and dusk because wildlife is more active.
Water Crossings
Water crossings must not exceed 0.5 metres. Salt water crossings are not permitted. Never enter a crossing that is closed or unsafe.
Seasonal Access
Broome depot operates from 1 April to 30 November. Kimberley roads and campgrounds may open later or close earlier. Gulf and Arnhem Land travel are not permitted from October to December.
Beach and Sand Driving
Use only authorised access points and permitted areas. Remain above the high tide mark, avoid salt water and never enter protected turtle nesting areas. If a permitted route cannot meet these conditions, do not enter. Customers are 100 percent liable for damage and recovery costs on beaches, sand tracks and sand dunes.
Remote Preparation
Check road reports, fuel availability, drinking water, food, communication equipment and campground bookings before each remote section. Route approval does not guarantee a road will be open.
Wildlife and Water Safety
Crocodiles occur in northern Australian waterways and coastal areas. Follow signs and ranger advice and swim only where currently authorised. Towing a camper trailer is not permitted.

Collecting Your 4WD in Broome
Collect your vehicle from 4 Pembroke Road, Broome WA 6725, by confirmed appointment during our 1 April to 30 November operating season. Arrange your transfer and allow time for shopping and supplies before leaving Broome.
Allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for a camper handover. Our team will explain the tent, kitchen, power, refrigeration, tyre pressures, compressor, recovery equipment and safe vehicle operation. A Prado 4WD car handover generally takes around 30 minutes, depending on your route and questions.

When is the Broome depot open?
Our Broome depot operates from 1 April to 30 November and is closed from 1 December to 31 March. During the season, appointments are available Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturday from 9am to 12pm. Saturday from 12pm to 4pm and Sunday from 9am to 4pm attract an after hours fee. Confirm your collection or return time when booking.
Why are there additional Broome depot fees and charges?
Broome is a remote and expensive seasonal depot location. Operating costs include seasonal staffing and premises, vehicle preparation, maintenance and the logistics of positioning vehicles in a region a long distance from major supply centres. Broome depot charges help cover these costs so we can offer collection and return in the Kimberley.
The Broome depot fee is A$400 for a Broome pickup or A$800 for a Broome drop off or return. The applicable fee is shown in your itemised quote. A depot location charge is separate from any applicable one way or after hours fee. Please review your total quotation before confirming.
When is the best time for a Broome 4WD holiday?
May to September is generally the main season for the Gibb River Road and Kimberley touring. April and October to November can be hotter and access is more variable. Road and park opening dates depend on rainfall, flooding and repairs. The depot being open does not mean all routes are accessible.
Can I drive on Cable Beach in my hire vehicle?
Cable Beach is a Broome highlight for coastal walks and sunset views. Driving is only possible where the Shire of Broome currently permits vehicle access and Adventure Rentals conditions can also be met. Do not assume the vehicle ramp or beach is open: redevelopment works, tides, events and turtle protection can restrict access.
Check the Shire of Broome Cable Beach access advice and signs before entering. Use designated routes, obey local speed limits and keep clear of people, camels and wildlife. Remain above the high tide mark, avoid salt water and never drive through turtle nesting areas. If no permitted route meets all these conditions, park and visit on foot.
Customers are 100 percent liable for damage and recovery costs arising on beaches, sand tracks and sand dunes. Beach driving is subject to the rental agreement.
Can I drive the Gibb River Road and visit Purnululu?
These routes may be included in an approved itinerary when roads and parks are open and conditions are suitable. The Purnululu access road is a separate detour off the Great Northern Highway. Allow extra time, book campsites where required and confirm access before each remote section.
Can I collect in Broome and return in another city?
One way hire may be available to Darwin, Perth, Cairns, Alice Springs or Adelaide, subject to availability, minimum hire periods, route approval and seasonal depot operations. Exmouth is a touring destination, not an Adventure Rentals return depot.
What is the minimum hire period from Broome?
The standard minimum is seven days, with longer minimums for selected routes and dates. The Broome to Darwin corridor has a 10 day minimum. The full sightseeing routes described above require substantially more time than the minimum rental period. Confirm the applicable conditions in your quote.
Can I travel the full Savannah Way in the wet season?
Gulf travel is not permitted in Adventure Rentals vehicles from October to December. Seasonal rain and flooding can affect access at other times too. Plan this route around approved dry season access, road and park conditions, and the operating seasons of both Broome and Cairns depots.
What permits and park passes will I need?
Requirements depend on your itinerary. Check WA park entry passes and camping bookings, private station entry and camping charges, and any community access permissions. Kakadu and Uluru Kata Tjuta have separate passes; other applicable NT parks use the NT parks pass and camping booking systems. The Mereenie Loop requires a permit. Check transit and community permissions for your exact Tanami itinerary before departure.
How should I prepare for Tanami Road?
Obtain route approval and check the latest WA and NT road advice. Confirm operating fuel outlets and opening hours directly, then plan fuel range, drinking water, food, spare tyres and emergency communications for long gaps between services. Do not rely on an old map or assume community fuel is available.
How old do I need to be to hire a 4WD?
All drivers must be at least 25 years old and meet the licence requirements contained in the Adventure Rentals rental agreement.
What driver licence is required for Broome 4WD hire?
Every driver must hold a full, current and unrestricted driver licence that is valid for the hired vehicle. The licence must be written in English. When a licence is not written in English, the driver must also provide an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation.
Are unlimited kilometres included?
Yes. Unlimited kilometres are included with Adventure Rentals 4WD car and camper hire, giving you flexibility for Kimberley, coastal and interstate journeys.
Can I hire a 4WD car without a roof top tent?
Yes. Adventure Rentals offers a Toyota Prado GXL 4WD car for travellers staying in hotels, motels, cabins, holiday parks or wilderness lodges.
What is the difference between the Toyota Prado car and Toyota Prado camper?
The Toyota Prado camper includes a roof top tent and camping equipment for sleeping, cooking and outdoor living. The Toyota Prado car does not include a roof top tent, bedding or complete camper kitchen equipment and is better suited to travellers using fixed accommodation or supplying their own camping equipment.
Does the camper include cooking and sleeping equipment?
Yes. Camper hires include a roof top tent, sleeping equipment, linen, refrigeration, cooking equipment, cookware, a camping table and chairs. The exact setup varies according to the selected camper model.
Can I drive the vehicle on dirt and unsealed roads?
Yes. Adventure Rentals vehicles may travel on formed gazetted unsealed roads and approved 4WD tracks. The maximum permitted speed on dirt, gravel and other unsealed roads is 80 kilometres per hour, or any lower posted or safe speed required by the conditions.
Can I drive at night?
No. Driving between sunset and sunrise is not permitted outside towns and cities. Driving at dawn and dusk is also not permitted because wildlife is more active and difficult to see.
Is roadside assistance included?
Adventure Rentals provides 24/7 on road support. Inherent mechanical faults receive free roadside assistance. Fees and charges apply to driver induced incidents and other issues listed in the rental agreement, including incorrect refuelling, flat batteries, lost keys, locked keys, tyre changing and vehicle recovery.
Can I tow a camper trailer?
No. Towing a camper trailer is not permitted with Adventure Rentals vehicles.
